Agriculture accounts for just under one per cent of Scotland's economy. There are about 52,000 farm holdings covering 5.6 million hectares, 85 per cent of which is less-favoured land. Barley is the largest crop, and there are 600,000 breeding cattle and 2.6 million breeding ewes. Drink (particularly whisky) accounts for 55 per cent of Scotland's £3.8 billion food and drink sector. Farming was supported by £532 million of support payments. The average net worth of a farm was £1.3 million.
