15. Same day cremation was enshrined in FBCA guidance in 1945 and was commonly practised before that. However, the practice of holding deceased persons over to cremate them later was discussed in the 1990s in connection with emerging concerns about 'the use of the world's resources and sustainability, the environment, and the likely effect on the cost of energy'. By 2011 the practice had been taking place for some time and the stakeholder organisations issued an agreed set of guidelines which confirmed that 'holding-over' for a period up to 72 hours was appropriate in certain circumstances which included having the consent of the next of kin and safety and sanitary considerations.
