Tests/assessments undertaken by applicants for senior civil service roles during hiring processes: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

The tests/assessments undertaken by applicants for senior civil service roles during hiring processes.

Response

The application process for senior roles in Scottish Government begins with an online application where candidates are asked to provide evidence of how they meet the essential criteria for the role by providing a supporting statement. Those deemed to best meet the essential criteria will be invited to assessment and interview.

The assessment process comprises online psychometric testing which will review cognitive ability, personality and behaviours. As part of the assessment stage, candidates may also be invited to participate in engagement panels with either staff or stakeholders. These assessments provide additional evidence and insight for the final interview panel into leadership style, and potential areas for development. At the panel interview candidates will be asked to provide further evidence of how they meet the essential criteria for the role.
