Working while shielding

Our advice is still to not leave your home for work. We can only change this advice when it is safe to do so.

The letter you have received is evidence for your employer that you cannot work outside the home. You do not need to get a separate 'fit note' from your GP.

We know it will be a challenge for many employers to put in place enough safeguards. We will continue to work with businesses to develop safe practices. This will allow those who have been asked to shield to feel safe to return to work. We will announce further details about this before the end of July.

If shielding prevents you from being able to work you are eligible to claim Statutory Sick Pay.

Financial support

If you have any concerns about money, please contact the Money Talk Team, from the Citizens Advice network in Scotland. The team can help you see what benefits you might be entitled to. They can also offer advice to help make your money go further. You can call the team on 0800 085 7145.

If you’re eligible, you can apply for Universal Credit or Employment and Support Allowance. The UK Government has introduced some temporary changes to make this process easier.

The Scottish Welfare Fund is available to those in crisis and in need of financial support.

UK furlough scheme

The UK Government Job Retention Scheme closed to new entrants on 10 June. Employers are now only able to furlough employees that have been furloughed for at least 3 weeks before 30 June. This means that the final date by which an employer could furlough an employee for the first time was 10 June.

We will provide a further update as soon as we can. We will also continue to liaise with the UK Government to ensure the needs of those who have been asked to shield are taken into account.

Support to access cash

Most banks are now offering priority support for those who have been asked to shield. To access this support, please contact your bank directly.
