Research Interests

My current research involves investigating the various populations of microflagellate phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria that are present in Scottish coastal waters using flow cytometry.  At present this research is focused at the Marine Scotland Science Long Term Monitoring station near Stonehaven.  I also provide advice on marine non-native species and am the MSS lead for Descriptor 2 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.  I am Deputy Technical Manager for all UKAS-accredited work carried out by the Phytoplankton Ecology Group and am responsible for day to day running of accredited Methods within our work area.

Collaborations

I collaborate with scientists throughout the UK on a range of marine non-native species work, and with scientists from Europe and North America through ICES Working Groups.  I work closely with staff from the University of Aberdeen, making use of their flow cytometry and electron microscopy facilities.  I regularly assist students with phytoplankton-related project work. 

External Committees and Responsibilities

I provide advice relating to marine non-native species and I am a member of ICES Working Groups Introductions and Transfers of Marine Organisms (WGITMO) and Ballast and Other Shipping Vectors (WGBOSV).  I attend the Scottish Action Groups on Invasive Non-Native Species and Marine Invasive Non-Native Species, and the Alien Species Group as part of the UK Technical Advisory Group for the Water Framework Directive.
