Research Interests

In broad terms, I am interested in understanding interactions between the freshwater environment and fish population dynamics. However, within this broad area of interest, particular interests currently include:

  • The influence of long-term environmental change on freshwater habitats
  • River temperature, processes, trends and influences on ecology
  • Relationships between water quality, fish production and growth
  • The influence of hydrology and hydraulics on salmonids
  • Acidification and recovery
  • Salmon population dynamics and management
  • The effects of stocking on salmon production
  • The influence of hyporheic zone processes on salmonid spawning success

Collaborations

I collaborate with a wide range of individuals in Government agencies (SEPA, SNH), fisheries trusts and universities. My primary academic collaborations are with staff at the Northern Rivers Institute (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/nri/) at the University of Aberdeen; the School of Geography , Earth and Environmental Sciences (http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/gees/index.aspx) at the University of Birmingham and those associated with the UK Upland Water Monitoring Network (http://uwmn.defra.gov.uk/sponsors/sponsors.php).

External Committees and Responsibilities

I represent MSS on the UK Freshwater Task Team (FTT) for Water Framework Directive (WFD) and also contribute towards the development of the Coordinated Agenda for Marine, Environment and Rural Affairs Science (CAMERAS) Monitoring Action Plan (MAP) for freshwater.
