My current scientific interests are focussed on ensuring Marine Scotland Science’s environmental monitoring and ecosystem health assessment serves current and future needs, especially in relation to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Over my career as a marine scientist in Scotland I have studied many aspects of the oceanography of Scottish waters, including sea lochs on the west coast, the circulation of the North Sea, and the hydrography of the deep waters north of Scotland. I have applied my knowledge to understanding and managing the environmental impact of the aquaculture and offshore oil and gas industries, as well as working extensively with the fishing industry in Scotland. I have been interested in how science interacts with policy, and in shaping the direction of Scottish and UK marine science. My interests are therefore broad and varied, and very much focussed on supporting the sustainable economic use of our seas.

External Committees and Responsibilities
I have been very much involved in the ICES scientific community, and have served on a number of oceanographic Expert Groups and Committees. I have chaired the WGOH and the Publications Committee, and represented the UK on the Advisory Committee and on the ICES Council. Within the UK I currently represent Marine Scotland on groups such as HBDSEG, MCCIP, UK-IMON and CAMERAS. Many acronyms I know, but you can explore them all using Google.
