Marine Scotland Science (MSS) undertakes research and monitoring to provide scientific and technical advice on a wide range of marine and fisheries issues. Work covers both the freshwater environment (at laboratories in Pitlochry, Montrose and an outstation in Shieldaig) and marine environment (at the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen).
MSS research goals are:
- Understanding the functioning of aquatic ecosystems
- Understanding and quantifying human effects on aquatic ecosystems, particularly on living resources and the aquatic environment

The monitoring and research undertaken by Marine Scotland Science is overseen by a Science Advisory Board to ensure the independence, impartiality and quality of science that it delivers.
