The initial development of management measures for the first phase sites began with the regional stakeholder workshops in October 2014. This informed the management options that were included in the 2014 Consultation on the Management of Inshore Special Areas of Conservation and Marine Protected Areas consultation which ran from 11 November 2014 to 02 February 2015.
After analysis of the responses received during the consultation period it was decided that four sites required further consideration and would be implemented through Marine Conservation Orders.
This representation period ran from 11 June to 09 August 2015, after which the final measures for the South Arran MPA were decided. However, changes were made to the other three sites and so a further representation period ran from 18 December 2015 to 18 January 2016.
After careful consideration the Loch Sunart to Sound of Jura MCO and the Wester Ross MCO were laid in the Scottish Parliament on 04 February 2016 to take effect on 23 March 2016. A new draft MCO for the Small Isles MPA will be brought forward later in 2016.
Management for all other phase 1 sites has been implemented through Inshore Fisheries Orders. These came into effect on 08 February 2016.
