Elgin Platform

On 25 March 2012, Total reported that a gas leak (following a well operation) occurred at the wellhead platform on the Elgin gas field which is located in the UK North Sea approximately 150 miles east of Aberdeen.

Marine Scotland's responsibilities are primarily centred around environmental advice and protection and it is included in two groups, which have been set up following this incident.

Government Interest Group (GIG) was established on Wednesday 28 March 2012 to share information and inform decisions by all parties. Marine Scotland represents the Scottish Government alongside:

  • Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)
  • Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)
  • Secretary of States Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP)
  • The Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

The GIG has met on an on-going basis throughout the incident and will continue to do so until it is decided that it is no longer needed.

An Environment Group, chaired by Marine Scotland, has also been established at the invitation of the GIG to discuss the environmental implications. Other members include:

  • Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)
  • Food Standards Agency (FSA)
  • Health Protection Scotland
  • Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)
  • Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) (Observer)
  • The Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
  • Total UK
