Regional Fishing Industry Assemblies

Following on from the successful Quayside Conversations events held in 2012-13, Marine Scotland ran a series of Regional Fishing Industry Assemblies around the Scottish coast during the first half of 2014.

As well as reporting on the actions Marine Scotland took to address the key points raised during the Quayside Conversations, views were sought on four issues that will have a major influence on the future prosperity of the Scottish seafood sector:

  • The Common Fisheries Policy and implementation of the landing obligation
  • Access to quota for active fishermen
  • Encouraging new entrants into the industry
  • Fishing and the shared marine environment

All of those connected with the local fishing and onshore seafood sector, as well as Local Authorities and non-governmental organisations, were invited to attend. This was an opportunity to put views on local or national issues directly to Marine Scotland staff and help shape future government policy.

The assemblies were held at the following locations around Scotland:

Region Location Date Venue
Orkney Kirkwall 14 March 2014 Kirkwall & St Ola Community Centre
Shetland Lerwick 21 March 2014 Shetland Museum
Western Isles Benbecula 04 April 2014 Dark Island Hotel

North East Peterhead 25 April 2014 Buchan Braes Hotel
North West Ullapool 26 June 2014 The Macphail Centre

A report on the assemblies - providing a recap of the topics discussed at each event and an update on those of common concern around the coast - is now available to download below:
