Orkney Minimum Landing Sizes (MLS)

Orkney illustrative mapNew technical measures for landing shellfish species into the Orkney Islands came into force on 07 March 2016.

These measures are:

Minimum landing sizes (MLS) have been increased to:

  • 70 mm for Velvet crab
  • 88 mm for Lobster (increasing to 90 mm from 07 March 2017)
A minimum landing size for Green crab has been set at 70 mm
The landing of berried (egg-bearing) Velvet crab caught around the Orkney Islands is prohibited

Background

These measures were developed and proposed by Orkney Sustainable Fisheries Ltd, which is part of the Inshore Fisheries Group network, and are intended to help improve the sustainability of these fisheries through the regulation of harvesting controls.

Marine Scotland consulted on OSF's behalf from 20 February to 15 May 2015. Following a successful outcome to the consultation the Scottish Government proceeded to bring the measures into force.
