Outer Hebrides Minimum Landing Sizes (MLS)

Outer Hebrides illustrative mapNew technical measures for landing shellfish species into the Outer Hebrides came into force on 29 May 2015:

Minimum landing sizes (MLS) are increased to:

  • 150 mm for Edible crab
  • 70 mm for Velvet crab
  • 88 mm for Lobster (moving to 90 mm from 29 May 2016)
A maximum landing size for female Lobster is set at 145 mm
The landing of crippled female Lobster (missing one or both claws) caught around the Outer Hebrides is prohibited.

Background

These measures were developed by the Outer Hebrides Inshore Fisheries Group (IFG) as part of its management plan to improve the sustainability of local fish stocks.

The IFG approached Marine Scotland in 2014 to legislate on its proposals. These have now been introduced following the successful outcome of a public consultation.
