UK Aquaculture Forum 2012

On 17 and 18 October 2012, Marine Scotland hosted the 3rd Annual UK Aquaculture Forum in Brussels.  Attendees included representatives from Marine Scotland, the UK constituent governments and environmental agencies along with industry representatives.

Business Meeting

The forum was opened with an update from Marine Scotland officials about aquaculture.  Representatives from the remaining UK devolved administrations then provided updates on aquaculture on behalf of their governments, followed by updates from industry.  The first day of the forum also included presentations on the Reform of the Common Fisheries Policy and the European Marine Fisheries Fund by Anna Zito, DG MARE and Trade Barriers and Exports by Pawel Swiderek, DG MARE.

On the 2nd day of the forum, Fotios Papoulias, DG ENVI delivered a presentation on Aquaculture development/Blue Growth and Natura 2000.  The main session of the day was dedicated to Aquatic Animal Health and Welfare Issues.

Networking Reception

On the evening of the first day of the forum, a reception was hosted by the devolved governments of the UK in Scotland House where industry representatives spoke about the continuing success story of the UK aquaculture industry, the prospects for growth, and how the EU institutions can assist.

The reception was attended by guest of honour, Lowri Evans, Director General, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, MEPs involved in Fisheries and Environment committees, in addition to influential figures within the Commission.  An array of Scottish seafood was showcased at the reception and the quality of the produce was met with overwhelming praise from the delegates and guests.
