The Capacity Working Group

The Group was established in 2013 as part of the restructured Ministerial Group for Sustainable Aquaculture.

Chaired by Charlotte Wright of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), membership of the Group includes representatives from the:

  • farmed finfish and shellfish businesses and trade associations
  • processors
  • Scottish Enterprise agencies/networks
  • regulatory bodies, Aquaculture Planning Authorities and The Crown Estate

Activity

The Group’s initial programme of activity focused on capacity, barriers to sustainable growth, and streamlining regulation & consenting, including the production of an interactive map of infrastructure. The majority of the actions are now complete or under way.

Since 2015 the Group has been contributing to the work of the Independent Review of Scottish Aquaculture Consenting (published 5th July 2016). It will continue to work with the Scottish Government to effect improvements to the planning and consenting process, to facilitate delivery of the continued sustainable growth of Scottish aquaculture.
