Woodland clearance – felling to waste

This capital item is available for the clear felling to of trees or woodland to waste (i.e. timber can be left on-site) where it will benefit specific habitats and species or for special landscape reasons. You must prepare a plan showing the area designated for tree removal and the management reasons behind this. This must be agreed with the Forestry Commission Scotland.

If felling conifers, you must ensure that stump protection procedures are followed. For safety reasons, cut trees must not be left hanging or leaning on adjacent trees.

You should ensure that the trees to be removed are cut as low as possible to the ground (below the bottom ring of branches) to ensure no regrowth. Once felled, the trees must be left on site to decompose, that is felled to waste. The felled trees may also be chipped and the chippings left on site to decompose.
