Only drystone or flagstone dykes which have suffered major damage or deterioration, that is totally collapsed sections of wall greater than 2 metres in length, are eligible.
Drystone or flagstone dykes or walls should be rebuilt with material traditional to the locality and to a standard and style normally found there.
This capital item also covers the rebuilding of fanks, stells and stone-faced earth banks ( ha-has within a Designed Landscape) where these are of traditional drystone dyke construction. Where renovated dykes cross access paths or bridle roads, gates or, if there is absolutely no alternative, stiles must be incorporated.
Provided it is traditional practice in the area, Dykes may be pointed or cement mortar may be used for setting coping stones as part of building or restoring a dyke. Pointing is not eligible when carried out on its own and not as part of building or restoring a dyke.
Where you propose to rebuild or restore a dyke that forms the boundary between your land and that of your neighbour, the payment will be in proportion to your level of responsibility; that is, if you and your neighbour are equally responsible for maintaining a dyke or maintaining a fence, you will be entitled to payment on half of the area of dyke. You may still claim full payment for any associated items such as gates.
If you have shared responsibility for the dyke, a Shared Boundary Agreement form must be completed and submitted with your application. Please note that you will be responsible for ensuring that the capital works are completed to the required specification and are fit for purpose.
