Highlands and Islands Veterinary Services Scheme (HIVSS)

Veterinary Services Scheme (HIVSS)

The aim of the Highlands and Islands Veterinary Services Scheme (HIVSS) is to ensure the provision of an adequate veterinary service for all animals kept for agricultural purposes and belonging to crofters and others of like economic status.

Historical Background

The Highlands and Islands Veterinary Services Scheme was introduced in 1915 as a result of requests to the Board of Agriculture from local authorities concerned about the mortality of livestock in the North and West of Scotland arising primarily from the absence of veterinary advice.
