Interim Scottish Indices of Deprivation 2003

Interim Scottish Indices of Deprivation 2003

The SIMD 2004 is based on the methodology used in the Scottish Indices of Deprivation 2003 (SID 2003). This was an interim index, produced by Oxford University's Department of Social Policy and Social Work and published in February 2003. SID 2003 used a well respected methodology which Oxford University had developed in similar previous work with England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It was a significant improvement on previous Scottish indices which attracted criticism for methodology, geography and data issues. SID 2003 provided a relative ranking of the wards in Scotland from 1 (most deprived) to 1222 (least deprived) based on a weighted combination of data for income, employment, health, education and access to services. Based on this index, some analysis was carried out on behalf of the Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics Development Group, studying how employment deprived people are distributed across each Local Authority.

This interim index has now been superseded by SIMD 2004 and it is no longer recommended for use.
