School Leaver Attainment by SIMD

High Level Summary of Statistics Trend Last update: June 2017

School Leaver Attainment by SIMD

By linking attainment data to the pupil census, the achievement of leavers by various groupings based on pupil characteristics can be compared. There has been a general improvement in attainment across the majority of groups.

There remains a gap in the attainment between leavers from the most deprived and least deprived areas. For 2015/16, 98.8 per cent of leavers from the 20% least deprived SIMD areas attained one or more qualification at SCQF level 4 (National 4 / Intermediate 1 / Standard Grade General) compared with 92.8 per cent of the leavers from the 20% most deprived areas. The gap is larger at SCQF level 6 or above – 42.7 per cent of leavers from the 20% most deprived areas compared with 81.2 per cent from the 20% least deprived areas attained one or more qualification at SCQF level 6 or better (equivalent to a Higher or above). Although there has been a small reduction in the gap over time, the picture is complex when the total number of awards at any given level is taken into account.
