Racist Incidents

The definition of a racist incident as given by Sir William MacPherson in his Report on the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry is "any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person."

There were 4,628 racist incidents recorded by the police in 2012-13, a decrease of 14% compared to 2011-12, when 5,389 incidents were recorded. The decrease in incidents recorded in 2012-13 is more in line with the generally downward trend seen since 2006-07.
