Looked After Children key trends

At 31 July 2016, there were 15,317 looked after children – a decrease of 83 (one per cent) from 2015. This is the fourth consecutive year the numbers have decreased following a peak of 16,248 in 2012; the numbers leaving care each year have been consistently more than number starting.
There is a continued decreasing trend in children being looked after at home with this group accounting for only 25 per cent of the total in 2016 compared to 32 per cent in 2012. Increasing numbers of children are being looked after away from home in community settings; the largest increase this year being with friends or relatives in kinship care (28 per cent of the total).
