Business expenditure on research and development (R&D) is crucial to the competitiveness of Scotland's economy. It is considered to be a key determinant of productivity growth and economic performance.

This publication presents information on research and development (R&D) performed by businesses operating in Scotland in 2017 as well as revisions to previously published data for 2015 and 2016. The data in this release are sourced from the Business Enterprise Research and Development (BERD) survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Note that this publication presents the latest statistics for private sector BERD only. Statistics on Gross Expenditure on R&D in 2017, of which BERD expenditure is a component, will become available in spring 2019.

What do these statistics cover?

Business Enterprise Research and Development (BERD) expenditure is the most reliable estimate of business R&D spending. The majority of the data presented here comes from R&D surveys conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

What year do the tables relate to?

The latest BERD statistics present information on R&D performed by businesses operating in Scotland in 2017.
