Scottish Food and Drink Manufactured Exports

The Global Connections Survey (GCS) provides estimates of rest of the UK and overseas food and drink manufacturing exports from Scotland. The latest GCS estimates that total food and drink manufacturing exports from Scotland increased by £3.9 billion (73%) between 2002 and 2013, from a value of £5.4 billion in 2002 to £9.3 billion in 2013. Food and drink exports to the rest of the world continue to represent a larger share of overall exports, accounting for 54% of total food and drink exports from Scotland in 2013.

Rest of the world food and drink manufacturing exports increased by £2.3 billion (81%) between 2002 and 2013, from a value of £2.8 billion in 2002 to £5.0 billion in 2013.  Food and drink exports from Scotland to the rest of the UK increased by £1.7 billion (64%) between 2002 and 2013, from a value of £2.6 billion in 2002 to £4.3 billion in 2013.

Over the period 2002 to 2013, overseas drink manufacturing exports have continued to account for a significant and rising share of Scotland’s total overseas food and drink manufacturing exports. Drink manufactured exports accounted for 84% of Scotland’s  total overseas food and drink manufacturing exports in 2002 - this share rose by 2 percentage points to 86% of total overseas food and drink manufacturing exports in 2013.  

Conversely, between 2002 and 2013 food manufacturing exports to the rest of the UK have consistently accounted for the majority of Scotland’s food and drink manufactured exports to the rest of the UK. Food manufacturing exports accounted for 72% of Scotland’s total food and drink manufactured exports to the rest of the UK in 2013.
