Adjusted Tenure Tables

CENSUS 2001 ADJUSTED TENURE TABLES

It is possible that Census 2001 form-fillers on housing benefit may have ticked 'living rent free' in response to the Census question on tenure asking whether the household owned or rented their accommodation. It was found that over 40,000 households which rented from a social landlord, such as a local authority, Scottish Homes or a housing association, were included in this category. This is a particular issue when looking at the characteristics of the private rented sector, as many tables combine private rented with living rent free.

The General Register Office for Scotland has published tables which provide the reported landlord for the "Rent Free" households on their Census updates website, thus allowing users to make adjustments to the main tenure tables. The following tables have been produced by the Housing Statistics branch in the Scottish Executive, and are being disseminated as a service to users. (Details of the tables are provided here)
