Making the Case: developing and using evidence for culture and heritage

Seminar with presentations and workshops from:

  • Dr Andrew Miles, ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change, University of Manchester is leading on the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded Understanding Everyday Participation - Articulating Cultural Values project which proposes a radical re-evaluation of the relationship between participation and cultural value.

  • Gregg Hutchings, Senior Consultant at BOP, and Alastair Evans, Head of Knowledge and Research at Creative Scotland discuss the findings of the evaluation of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme.

  • Laura Kuhfuss, Research Fellow, St Andrews University, and Russell Whyte, Economist, Historic Scotland, explore how much are taxpayers willing to pay for culture? They discuss their research to estimate how willingness to pay (WTP) for the conservation of historic sites varies with how well-known these sites are and whether people have visited them.

  • Nick Merriman, Director of The Manchester Museum is leading on an ACE funded Quality Metrics Pilot which is exploring the possibility of a sector-led metrics framework to capture the quality and reach of arts and cultural productions.

  • Charlotte Gilmore, Chancellor Fellow at the University of Edinburgh will discuss her current research on Examining Cultural Value within contemporary Music Ensemble.  A project which looks at perceptions and responses to the work of Red Note Ensemble and Saphha.

  • Sian Jones, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Manchester, has carried out a wide range of research on cultural heritage. She will be discussing her recent AHRC Cultural Value project called ‘Valuing the Historic Environment: a critical review of approaches to social value’.

2006

The CEATnet secretariat organised a seminar with Steven Marwick of Evaluation Support Scotland, and other presentations by Fiona Campbell of Voluntary Arts Scotland and Fiona Rogan of Scottish Community Drama Association . The purpose of the event was to inform colleagues of ESS's services and to consider and discuss issues surrounding best practice in project evaluation.
