Asylum Seekers & Refugees

Asylum Seekers & Refugees

Refugees and asylum-seekers face particular challenges in terms of access to and participation in further and higher education and skills training. Refugees and asylum-seekers have often been unable to bring proof of their educational experiences and attainment with them to the UK and, as such, find it difficult to access appropriate courses and training. Language is also an issue for this group as many refugees and asylum-seekers require language support as well as more general support that takes account of their circumstances and experiences.

  • Refugee Pupils in Scottish Schools (1999) This paper provides illustrations of how refugee parents and pupils have faced up to the necessity and challenge of continuing (or beginning) their education in a new country, and how schools have understood and responded to the families and to their children's educational needs.
