The law governing firearms, particularly airguns and replica weapons, is complex and sometimes difficult to understand. The Scottish Government believes that the law is overdue for reform.
In the wrong hands, airguns can be extremely dangerous weapons. They cause injury, damage and death. Airguns accounted for almost half (49%) of all offences involving firearms in 2013-14.
We are committed to introducing an air weapon licensing regime as set out in Part 1 of the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015, which received royal assent in August this year. Licensing will enable the police to ensure that only those who can use air weapons safely, and with good reason, will be able to access them in the future.
If you have an airgun or other firearm that is no longer needed, you should hand it in to the police who can dispose of it safely.
