Scotland has a strong base of innovation to build on. It has a tradition of commitment to research and science, a highly skilled workforce and world-renowned universities producing high impact research. If we are to become more competitive, we need to ensure that Scottish businesses understand the benefits of investing in innovation and research and development, not just in Scotland, but across Europe.
The Scottish Government – alongside our partners such as Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Scottish Funding Council - will support this through promotion of the expertise of our universities as well as through a range of new and existing programmes and initiatives including our network of Innovation Centres and our membership of the Vanguard Initiative. We will also pursue deeper alignment with European innovation policy and funding, and increase our European collaborations around key areas of innovation specialisation through the new Ministerial-led Innovation Forum.
We will support international collaboration by piloting Innovation and Investment Hubs at key global locations. These will play a key role in promoting the research and innovation capacity and capability of Scottish companies and universities in attracting investment and funding, and in supporting international collaboration, which delivers economic benefits and helps address societal and global challenges. The Hubs will provide a focus for Scottish companies or universities needing presence in a country, capital or continent, including ensuring links to our network of Innovation Centres.
