Scottish Affairs Office, Washington DC

Map of North America

The Scottish Affairs Office in Washington DC exists to help promote Scotland's interests in the United States and Canada.

The USA is Scotland's biggest overseas trading partner; our largest inward investor and a hugely valuable tourism market. US students account for the second largest overseas group in Scotland and links between Scottish schools, colleges and universities and their counterparts in the USA are developing all the time. The Scottish Government's key objectives in the USA are set out in the Scottish Governments engagement strategy for the USA published in December 2016.

Canada also has a special significance for Scotland and represents a major export and tourism market. The strong and enduring historical links between our two countries ensure that there is no other country in the world where the Scottish Diaspora is so prevalent or so well defined, not least in Nova Scotia (New Scotland). The promotion of Scotland in Canada is supported by the team established in Toronto in February 2011, which works to realise the full potential of closer economic, cultural, educational and Governmental links between our two nations. Scottish Government's key objectives in Canada are set out in the Scottish Government's engagement strategy for Canada, published in December 2016.

Scotland is also establishing a strong brand presence elsewhere in the Americas, particularly in South America where there are a number of emerging economies.  In 2013 Scottish Development International opened an office in Sao Paulo in recognition of the importance of the Brazilian market to Scotland.

Working closely with colleagues in Scottish Development International, VisitScotland, and other key Scottish agencies and institutions the Scottish Affairs Office covers the totality of Scotland’s engagement with the Americas.
