From 2008/09 to 2016/17 the Scottish Government has provided funding of nearly £39 million to NHS Boards for direct support to carers and young carers. This resource is contributing to, amongst other things, funding of carers centres and other projects across Scotland, which provide a range of services including short breaks, information & advice and advocacy support.
NHS Boards across Scotland have been tasked in preparing and submitting Carer Information Strategy (CIS) Plans to Scottish Ministers.
Guidance has been issued to all NHS Boards. In addition to the funding of Carers Centres, Young Carers Projects and the Voluntary Sector, the following priorities are highlighted and expected to be included in CIS plans:
- Carer training
- Carer involvement in hospital discharge
- Workforce training
- Income maximisation
- Other support (such as information, advice and advocacy)
- BME carers and other hard-to-reach groups
