National Care Standards

Scottish Ministers developed the National Care Standards to ensure everyone in Scotland receives the same high quality of care no matter where they live.

The Standards explain what you can expect from any care service you use, written from the point of view of the person using the service. They also help you raise concerns or complaints. There are six main principles behind the Standards:

  • Dignity
  • Privacy
  • Choice
  • Safety
  • Realising Potential
  • Equality and Diversity

The National Care Standards are distributed by Booksource on behalf of the Scottish Government:

A number of the National Care Standards are available in large print and easyread. If you require a copy of the National Care Standards in large print, please email standardsandsponsorship@gov.scot.

Please note that the large print versions of the National Care Standards contain a summarised introduction, however all of the standards are included.
