Fit for Work Scotland is a new advice and assessment service, which aims to help employees, employers and GPs better manage sickness absence.
Fit for Work is a UK Government initiative. The Scottish Government is delivering the service through NHSScotland.
There are two elements to Fit for Work Scotland:
- Advice: Access to health and work advice through a website and freephone helpline for employees, employers, and GPs
- Assessment: Employees who have reached four weeks sickness absence – or are expected to – can be referred by their GP or employer. All referrals will receive a telephone assessment with a health professional, who will use a whole-person approach to identify all the obstacles preventing the employee from returning to work. A Return to Work Plan will be produced with recommendations to facilitate a safe and sustained return to work. These will include both health and non-health recommendations and will be informed by each individual's work/life circumstances.
Referral into Fit for Work Scotland is voluntary and the employee must give their consent to be referred. All information will remain confidential and will only be shared with GPs and employers with explicit consent. Whilst neither referral nor implementation of the advice provided is mandatory, by improving health and reducing sickness absence, the service will benefit employees, employers and GPs.
A Programme Board has been established for Fit for Work Scotland:
