Scottish Government Higher Activity Radioactive Waste Policy

This is a high level Policy which provides the framework for the long-term management of higher activity radioactive waste arising in Scotland.

The Policy is not prescriptive in its approach, recognising that it applies to waste:

  • which may not be produced for decades; and
  • for which long-term management options may not be feasible at present or have yet to be developed.
Policy Aim and Principles

The aim of the Policy is to ensure that all activities for the long-term management of the waste are made in a way that protects the health and interests of people and the integrity of the environment now and in the future.

This aim needs to be considered at the time long-term management decisions are made and when treatment or storage or disposal of the waste is undertaken. These decisions will need to recognise the risk of foreclosing alternative long-term management options and the future impact of these long-term management activities on people and the environment.
