Radioactive Waste Management in Scotland

The Scottish Government is committed to dealing responsibly with radioactive waste in Scotland and engaging the Scottish public on radioactive waste management policy, which is a devolved matter.

Radioactive waste is produced in Scotland from sources such as nuclear power generators, the decommissioning of nuclear power stations, the health sector, industry and research. It is classified according to its level of radioactivity:

  • Very Low Level Waste
  • Low Level Waste
  • Intermediate Level Waste
  • High Level Waste
