SAAS

Eligible students will be entitled to apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for help with living-costs and travel.  The support available from SAAS is outlined briefly below.  However, for more detailed information including eligibility conditions visit www.saas.gov.uk or phone them on 0300 555 0505.

Bursary and student loan

The amount of loan and bursary you can receive will depend upon your household income and whether you are a young or independent student.  For more information on young and independent students please see the SAAS website.

Travel expenses

You can claim the cost of one return journey between your home and university each year as well as the cost of any medical insurance.

Living-costs grants

You may be entitled to the following grants:

  • Dependants’ grant
    You can claim this income-assessed grant for your husband, wife, civil partner or partner if they are on a low income and you have to support them.
  • Lone Parents’ grant
    You can claim for this income-assessed grant if you are single, widowed, divorced, separated or your civil partnership has dissolved, and you are bringing up children on your own.
  • Disabled students allowance
    The Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) is a non-income assessed allowance intended to cover any extra costs or expenses you might incur while studying, which arise because of your disability.
  • Vacation grant for care leavers
    If you have been in care and require help with your accommodation costs you may be able to claim the Vacation grant for care leavers.
