Since publication of the Action Plan in January 2012, we have made significant progress towards delivering our ambitions. More information about this is contained in Scotland's Digital Future: Progress Update, which we published on 8 October 2012.
The Step Change Programme aims to deliver a significant uplift in next generation broadband coverage as a key step on our road to becoming a world class digital nation by 2020
The contract to deliver improvements in the Highlands and Islands was awarded on 26 March 2013. The project will deliver a future-proofed, fibre backbone that will stretch from Campletown in Argyll to Brae on Shetland via new network nerve centres on dozens of towns inlcuding Oban, Fort William, Aviemore and Ullapool.
The second part of the infrastructure jigsaw is the Rest of Scotland project. The contract was was awarded to BT on 9 July 2013. The £264 million investment through this project will provide next generation access for those areas where the market won’t currently go, helping to address the digital divide.
These ambitious and challenging projects will ensure that communities right across Scotland will have access to next generation broadband, providing a platform for future economic development and regeneration.
At this stage we are unable to confirm exactly where the 85-90% premises covered by our intervention will be located. Detailed technical and survey work is being carried out over the next few months before precise rollout plans and timescales can be confirmed.
