dot.rural is a shining example of a world class Scottish research institution, driving innovation in digital technology.

Based at the University of Aberdeen, dot.rural brings together a team of 80+ researchers from across the disciplines of computer science, communications engineering, human geography, sociology, business, transport studies, health sciences and environmental science.

Research activities are organised around four broad rural challenges of Transport, Enterprise & Culture, Healthcare and Natural Resource Conservation. Through user-led application of digital technology, dot.rural’s work aims to make rural areas more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

The institution’s technology research is focused around natural language generation (NLG) and affective communication, mechanisms to support reasoning, coordination and collaboration, intelligent information infrastructures, and satellite and wireless communications

dot.rural works with NGOs, community based organisations, public sector, industry and academic institutions.
