Heerlen Project Learning Journey

In March 2016, the Scottish Government and Scottish Development International sponsored a learning journey for stakeholders in the public, private and academic sectors to the Heerlen project in the Netherlands which, for the past 8 years, has been exploring the potential of geothermal energy from stored water in abandoned coalmines.

Objectives

The objectives of the learning journey were:

  • To provide a supportive environment in which delegates can visit an international model of minewater geothermal, seeing and hearing how to turn the vision into reality.
  • To introduce delegates to the variety of issues (including financial, technological, environmental, geological and regulatory) which will require to be addressed in the planning, development and implementation of a minewater geothermal project.
  • To provide an opportunity for delegates to network with other delegates and international stakeholders, identifying future potential project partners and opportunities for future skills and knowledge exchange.
  • To help delegates understand the potential impact of a minewater geothermal project on the local landscape, environment and economy, including scale of infrastructure required to support the technology used to abstract and transport the heat.

A report of the site visit has been produced and a number of the presentations given by the hosts, are available for viewing.
