The industry-led Marine Energy Group (MEG) was established by the Scottish Government's Forum for Renewable Energy Development in Scotland (FREDS) in October 2003. MEG's task was to assess the potential for developing wave and tidal energy in Scotland, and to produce an action plan for developing that potential.
It published its first action plan, Harnessing Scotland's Marine Energy Potential in 2004.
In 2009, MEG published a Marine Energy Road Map.
The group's most recent publication is the Marine Energy Action Plan (June 2012). The action plan is an update to the road map of 2009, and sets out the steps to be taken by governments, public agencies and the private sector to realise Scotland’s marine energy ambitions.
In 2013, some of the original MEG members were co-opted onto Scottish Renewables’ marine energy work group. This reconstituted group has been monitoring implementation of the 2012 action plan recommendations.
