Stemming from the Museums Summit on 2 June 2009, a think tank was established which recommended the establishment of a National Strategy for Scotland's Museums and Galleries, and the development of a National Development Body for the sector. The final Think Tank report can be viewed here and the Scottish Government response to the Think Tank report is available here.
Museums Galleries Scotland have taken on the role of developing the strategy, in partnership with a Museums Strategy Group, and becoming the new National Development Body. The strategy will be launched early in 2012. For further information, including on the consultation for the strategy please click here
Museums Galleries Scotland also manage the Scottish Government's Recognitions Scheme Recognition Scheme which was introduced in 2007. The Scheme's main purposes are to highlight the collections and to widen access for more people to enjoy them by providing funding for improvements.
The Scottish Government directly funds National Museums Scotland and National Galleries Scotland.
