Public library services in Scotland are entirely the responsibility of local authorities which have a statutory duty to secure the provision of adequate library facilities for all persons resident in their area.

The Scottish Library and Information Council is the independent advisory body to the Scottish Government and Scottish ministers on library and information matters. Links on their website allow users to locate local libraries, museums, archives and collections.

The National Library of Scotland is Scotland's only legal deposit library. It is Scotland's largest library and users have free access to over 14 million items.
