Community Sports Hubs

The impact on communities from hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games inNewark Glasgow will be significant. We are clear about encouraging people to take their own steps to becoming more active and providing facilities via community sports hubs for them to do so. sportscotland's contribution to the Legacy Plan is to support the development of Community Sports Hubs, which aim to increase the number of people, of all ages, participating in sport and physical activity across Scotland.

Community Sports Hubs are based in local facilities such as sports centres, community centres, the natural environment and/or schools, and will bring local people together and provide a home for local clubs and sports organisations.

They will also provide information, support and advice on a wide range of sports and physical activities to make it easier for local people to get involved and engage in a more active and healthier lifestyle.

The specifics of each hub and what it offers will vary according the local need and local resource. However, all hubs will work to the following five principles:

  • Growth in participation
  • Engage the local community
  • Promote community leadership
  • Offer a range of sporting opportunities
  • Bring all appropriate key partners/groups/people together

The Scottish Government believes the roll out of Community Sports Hubs is at the heart of its lasting legacy from Glasgow 2014. We are continuing to invest in providing easy access to local facilities for communities across Scotland. There are currently plans to develop 145 Community Sports Hubs in 30 local authorities, and we are committed to developing at least 150 across every local authority by 2016. 50 per cent will be based in schools, and 66 hubs are already beginning to work in their local communities.
