The Active Schools network aims to ensure that there are more higher quality opportunities for all children to participate in sport within schools, while motivating and inspiring them to participate throughout their life and to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
While the focus is sport, the Active Schools network connects to the wider landscapes of play, dance, exercise and active living.
A 3 year agreement with local authorities to deliver Active Schools was implemented in 2008/09. By 2010/11, all 32 local authorities in Scotland had comitted to deliver the programme in partnership with sportscotland, and this delivery will continue through to 2015.
The Active Schools Network of managers and coordinators have successfully continued to grow participation, providing an increased number and range of opportunities for children and young people to participate in sport in schools.
In the 2010/11 academic year, nearly 5 million participant sessions were delivered. 73% of these sessions were dlivered by volunteers.
