Connected What is this programme?

Celebrate, a joint venture involving the BIG Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund and sportscotland, was a £4 million lottery fund which provided opportunities for people across Scotland to celebrate the Commonwealth Games and the people, places and culture of the Commonwealth.

Celebrate launched in April 2013 and offered grants of up to £10,000 to community groups, local authorities and schools across Scotland. Celebrate closed to applications on 30 May 2014.

Connected What does the programme aim to achieve?

The programme aimed to encourage communities to come together in recognition and celebration of the diverse range of identities, cultures and experiences of people in the Commonwealth.

It also aimed to help people feel a sense of pride and engagement with a once-in-a-lifetime national event – to feel connected to their own community and the wider family of Commonwealth nations

Big Lottery Fund delivered Celebrate on behalf of the four lottery distributors in Scotland: BIG Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund and sportscotland.

Celebrate closed to applications on 30 May 2014. Celebrate projects will continue running until the latter half of 2015.

Connected What has the programme achieved so far?

Since its launch in April 2013, Celebrate has made 642 awards totalling £4,511,059. Celebrate has seen applications from a huge range of groups, a significant number of whom have never applied for funding from BIG before. Projects were rich and diverse with many seizing the opportunity to have a multi-cultural element through a myriad of activities such as song, dance, cookery and costume. Celebrate made a significant contribution to the celebration of the Games and the Commonwealth at a local level. It also went a long way to contributing to the goodwill engendered by the Games that was palpable throughout the duration of this global event in Scotland.

Celebrate uptake was as follows:

  • 642 awards have been made totalling £4,511,059;
  • the average grant size was £7,027;
  • Glasgow saw the majority of the projects, however, all  local authority areas had Celebrate projects taking place in them.
