Beyond the School Gate guidance was launched on 3rd June 2014. It provides guidance for local authorities, schools, retailers, caterers and other partners on what they can do to influence the food environment around schools and support children and young people to make healthier choices.
Four main areas are identified for action: Stay on site and alternative outlet provision in schools; Marketing, promotions and incentives; Support and guidance for caterers and retailers; Environmental Health, licensing and planning.
The Beyond the School Gate guidance is intended to complement Better Eating, Better Learning and the extensive work already going on in schools to encourage children and young people to eat a school meal. Taken together, these documents offer a holistic package of support for partners to encourage children and young people to make healthy choices, both inside and outside of school.
