This report investigates whether the adoption of mobile and flexible working arrangements by larger organisations creates significant carbon reductions compared with a "business as usual" approach and analyses the factors which influence the effectiveness of such measures.

Executive Summary

This research study into the adoption of various forms of flexible working by four large organisations and one professional body concludes that:-

• Flexible working, particularly home working, reduces travel emissions and can deliver net carbon savings even when travel rebound effects and increased energy usage at the alternative workplace are taken into account; and

• Wider carbon savings beyond transport emissions can also be delivered through the roll-out of flexible working e.g uptake of home-working enables organisations to rationalise their office estate.
