Describes catch comparison trials that were conducted in the North Sea to evaluate the Faithlie Cod Avoidance Panel (FCAP) that has been developed by Willie Hepburn of Faithlie Trawls, Fraserburgh.

Executive Summary

Catch comparison trials were conducted in the North Sea to evaluate the Faithlie Cod Avoidance Panel that has been developed by Willie Hepburn of Faithlie Trawls, Fraserburgh. After modifying the original design by increasing the size of the fish outlet holes the results show a large and significant decrease in the number of the three main whitefish species retained. The reductions by weight of cod, haddock and whiting are 62, 74 and 66% respectively. Due to the fact that there were very few Nephrops caught it is not possible to determine whether the Faithlie Cod Avoidance Panel has any effect on their capture.
