This publication accompanies the Education (School and Placing Information) (Scotland) Regulations 2012 (“the 2012 Regulations”). The 2012 Regulations set out a range of information that must be provided by local authorities, including information relating to placing requests and information that needs to be contained in the School Handbook. This guidance only relates to the requirements for the School Handbook.
The guidance aims to provide a framework for local authorities and schools to develop, in partnership with their local parents, a School Handbook that reflects the needs and circumstances of each school community. It provides guidance on what and how information can be communicated to parents and carers, reflecting Curriculum for Excellence and the importance of effective parental involvement in children’s learning.
Information that is legally required by the Regulations to be included in the School Handbook can be found at Annex A.
The guidance was developed in partnership with local authorities and informed by the Scottish Government’s public consultation on School Handbooks, held between November 2010 and March 2011. A summary of the findings of the consultation can be found at Annex B.
