Scottish Executive Urban Rural Classification 2003 / 2004

Abstract

The Scottish Executive (SE) 6 and 8-fold urban rural classifications are intended to provide a consistent way of defining urban and rural areas across Scotland. Two main criteria have been used to develop the SE 6 and 8 fold urban rural classifications: population as defined by the General Registers Office for Scotland (GROS) and accessibility based on drive time analysis to differentiate between accessible and remote areas in Scotland. Areas of contiguous high population density postcodes defined by GROS and known as Settlements form the basis of the classification.

For the 2003 / 2004 classification the Settlement population estimates based on 2001 Census Output Areas were the most accurate available and these along with settlement boundaries also built up from Output Areas were used in this project in preference to the postcode derived Settlements 2001 dataset.
